LILLIAN BEATRICE JOHNSON SMITH 

  SURRY - Beatrice Johnson Smith, 81, a resident of Surry was surrounded by 
her loving family as she passed away on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, at Sentra 
Louise Obici, after a short illness.

  Born Oct. 28, 1930, in Dendron, she was a daughter of the late Jabray 
Johnson and Hannah Peck Johnson and was also preceded in death by her husband 
of 33 years, Andrew Lake Smith; her brother, Jack W. Johnson and his wife, 
Alice.

  Mrs. Smith was a member of Moore's Swamp Baptist Church, a longtime member 
of the Eastern Star, and had served the community on the Pork, Peanut and Pine 
Festival Committee for many years.  After a 30-year career, as a note teller, 
at the Bank of Surry, she retired in 1993.

  She leaves to cherish her memory, her devoted daughter and son, Selinda Ward 
Judkins, and Cornell Ward and wife, Vikki; grandchildren, Sandra J. Gutierrez 
and husband, Mo, Glenn Ward, James C. Judkins, III, and Erica W. Hahn and 
husband, Terry; great-grandchildren, Miranda Star Judkins, Amber Sky Judkins, 
Olivia Grace Hahn and Carson James Gutierrez; siblings, Shirley J. Johnson and 
wife, Jean, Bina J. Gwaltney and husband, Will, Alice J. Pittman and husband, 
Walter, and Lucille J. Epps and husband, Billy; stepchildren, Andrew L. Smith, 
Jr., Steven D. Smith, F.M. Smith and Mattie B. Walters; a number of step-
grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.

  The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight, Oct. 2, 2012, at 
R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and crematory, Wakefield Chapel, 11414 General 
Mahone Hwy. Wakefield, VA 23888.  The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. 
Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Ray Rowland 
officiating.  Burial will follow at Mill Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery, Ivor.

She 1m. Jos. Ray WARD 24 Apr 1948 in Elizabeth City, Pasquotank Co., NC; 
   they div. in 1977.  Ray, retired captain of the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry, 
   & his second wife are buried in Whaleyville Methodist Church Cemetery.
