Whitmore, age 103, died January 6, 1990. She was predeceased by her husband Edward Thomas and a son, Edward C. Whitmore. She is survived by a daughter, Lucille Pond of Crewe; two sons, William L. Whitmore of Point Pleasant, N.J., and William Thomas Whitmore of Crewe; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Milton L. Jennings Funeral Home, 11:00 a.m. Tuesday with burial in Rocky Hock Cemetery in Wakefield, Va. at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Crewe United Methodist Church or Nottoway Co. Emergency Squad. Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. ****************************************************************************** LULA C. WHITMORE, CREWE'S OLDEST RESIDENT, DIES AT 103 Mrs. Lula C. Whitmore, Crewe's oldest citizen, died Saturday, Jan. 6. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Thomas, and her son, Edward C. Whitmore. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Lucille Pond of Crewe; two sons, William L. Whitmore of Point Pleasant, N.J. and Wilbur Thomas Whitmore of Crewe; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Milton L. Jennings Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Tuesday with burial in Rocky Hock Cemetery in Wakefield at 2 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Crewe United Methodist Church or the Nottoway County Emergency Squad. Mrs. Whitmore was born July 15, 1886 in Surry County, near Wakefield, and grew up on farm there. At the age of 23 she married E.T. Whitmore and they moved to Crewe where he had a job on the railroad. They didn't like it very much at first so they moved back to Surry County for a few years before returning to Crewe to spend the rest of their lives. Mr. Whitmore retired in 1952 as a Norfolk & Western Railway Co. engineer. He died in July 1965.
