WEST POINT - Thomas Bryant Whitmore, Jr., 89, of West Point, died peacefully at his home on July 30. He was born in Dendron, Va., the son of Irene and Thomas Whitmore. Upon high school graduation, Tom served three years in the United States Army Air Force during WWII and was stationed in India serving the China Burma India (CBI) Theater of War, earning staff sergeant status until the war ended. In April of 1957, after having worked eight years of General Motors, Tom came to West Point and purchased the former Browning Chevrolet dealing, now known as Whitmore Chevrolet. That same year, Tom joined the West Point Kiwanis Club, and was an active member for the next 54 years, serving as president for at least one year, and receiving the George F. Hixon Fellowship Award as well as the "Legion of Honor" status. Tom was a charter member and past president of the West Point Ruritans Club, a past member of the West Point Ruritans Club, a past member of the Citizens and Farmers Bank Board of Directors, and an active member of First Baptist Church of West Point. He also served as West Point town councilman for eight years, the last four of which he was vice-mayor of the town under Mayor Bill Robinson. He served in the West Point Economic Development Authority for 35 years. Tom had many interests which included hunting, fishing, boating, golf and William and Mary Football. Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Harriet Faison Whitmore. He is survived by two daughters, Kay Johnson (Bruce) and Sandy Brooks; a son, Thomas Whitmore, III (Kitty); grandchildren, Jason Johnson (April), Austin Johnson, Whitney, Jordan and Thomas Whitmore IV, and Ryan Brooks; great- grandchildren, Tyler and Landon Johnson. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3, at First Baptist Church, 414 Main Street, West Point. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, also at the church.
