WHITMORE, 84, OF WAKEFIELD, DIES William Edward Whitmore, 84, a retired farmer of Wakefield, died Sunday morning in Suffolk hospital after being ill a few weeks. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ava E. Whitmore, and was a member of the Congregation Christian church and the son of the late J.C. and Narcissa Atkins Whitmore [sic*] of Surry County. Besides his wife he is survived by five sons, J.C. Whitmore of Wakefield, G.T. and M.B. Whitmore of Crewe, and W.H. Whitmore of Petersburg; two daughters, Mrs. C.G. Goodrich and Mrs. R.C. Carroll of Wakefield, and 26 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the residence Tuesday at 4 p.m. with interment in Rocky Hock cemetery, Surry County. The Rev. Murdock and W.G. He was the son of Joel Claude and Narcissus Atkinson Whitmore [sic*], of Surry County, and a member of the Congregational Christian Church. He is survived by his wife, Ara T. Whitmore, of Wakefield; five sons, J.C. Whitmore, Crewe; W.H. Whitmore, Petersburg; G.T. and M.B. Whitmore, Newport News; two daughters, Mrs. C.G. Goodrich and Mrs. R.E. Carroll, of Wakefield; 26 grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the residence by the Rev. M.W. Butler, assisted by the Rev. C.E. Gerringer, of Newport News, and the Rev. W.G. Bates and the Rev. Birthdate from D.Cert. 10225 (Suffolk #168), which also gives his parents wrong; the informant was his son Joel Claude WHITMORE. His parents were actually Claudius Wesley WHITMORE (1833 - 1915) and his first wife Eugenia Ann ATKINSON (1838 - 1887). They are buried in Union Christian Church Cemetery, near Dendron. Claudius 2m. Sarah Cornelia ANDREWS, 7 Aug 1890, in Surry Co. He was a Confederate veteran, having served in Co. D, 10th Battalion VA Heavy Artillery. He applied for a pension 25 Apr 1905. (Act of 1902) He was appointed Postmaster of Whitmore, Surry Co., 18 Jul 1877.
