Charles Dorsey Walters passed away peacefully at his home on July 25, 2012. He is survived by his devoted wife, Katherine Elaine Walters and five children; Charles Dorsey Walters, III (Karl) and his wife, Stephanie of Key West, Fla.; Elaine Fletcher Chapman and her husband, Bob of Onancock, Va.; Timothy Slocum Walters and his wife, Susie of Nags Head, N.C.; Gary Dirk Walters and his wife, Ginger of Glen Allen, Va. and Wayne Gailey Walters of Yorktown, Va.; eight grandchildren; Helaine Alex McFerron, Joshua McFerron, Tim Walters, Erin Walters Cummings, Gailey Walters, David Walters, Eric Walters and Carleigh Walters and five great-grandchildren. His older brother, Wallace Walters, also survives him. He was predeceased by his first wife of 47 years, Eleanor Fletcher Walters. Dr. Walters was born in Bennettsville, S.C. He was an Eagle Scout. He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1947. He earned a Master's Degree in Education from University of South Carolina in 1953 and completed a Doctorate of Education from George Washington University in 1968. While earning his undergraduate and Master’s degree he was a professional musician for 12 years, playing the saxophone in dance bands. He taught in public schools and colleges for over 50 years. He taught science at Clover High School in Clover, S.C., George Mason High School in Falls Church, Va. and Newsome Park Middle School in Newport News, Va. He was an Associate Professor at Old Dominion University for 10 years and a Professor at Hampton University for 15 years. He was an adjunct Professor with St. Leo University for 25 years, teaching religion in the classroom and online. He also attended the Presbyterian School of Education and the Virginia Union Theological Seminary. Dr. Walters was an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ. He served several churches: Burtons Grove Christian Church in Wakefield, Va., Dendron Christian Church in Elberon, Va., Union Christian Church in Dendron, Va. and New Lebanon Christian Church in Elberon, Va. Dr. Walters also served as a volunteer minister in the Federal Prison System for over thirty years and was associated with the Prison Visitation and Support Group from Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Walters was a champion for the underdog. Frequently he expressed his opinions on issues of social importance in his many letters to the Editor published in local papers. He had a deep love for the ocean. He once built a large boat in his back yard from scrap wood he found at the beach. He often attended Wednesday services at Burton Parish in Williamsburg, Va. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the VCU Massey Cancer Center, 401 College Street, Richmond, VA 23298. A graveside service will be held at Union Christian Church Cemetery in Surry County, Va. on Saturday, July 28, at 10 in the morning. Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
