SURRY COUNTY, VA - WILLS - James Allen, 24 Jan 1711 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- Wills: James Allen, Southmark Parish, Surry Co, VA WILL OF JAMES ALLEN 24TH JANUARY 1711 In the name of God amen I James Allen of Lawnes Parish in the county of Surry being sick and weak in body but of perfect sense and disposing mind and memory all land and praise be given to almighty God therefore and having in remembrance the certainty of death but the uncertainty of the time when I do settle, establish, and ordain this my Last Will and Testament in manner following: First and principally and far more worthy in esteem and consideration than any outward good or enjoyments I recommand my soul to almigty God, the ffather of spirits, trusting and firmly believing through their mercys of God in and of us Christ to receive thee pardon and remission of all my sins whenever this mortal life shall cease, and it is then also my will and desire that my body be committed to the earth to be buryed in Christian manner at the discretion of my Executor hereafter named and for what worldly estate it hath pleased the Lord in mercy to possess me with after my just debts and funeral charges are defrayed, I give, bequeath and dispose of as followeth: I give and bequeath to my loving brother Arthur Allen and to his heirs forever fourteen hundred acres of land granted to me by Pattent dated the 25th day of Aprill Anno Dom. 1701 sciutate on the south side of the main Blackwater Swamp, part in the County of Surry, and part in the County of Isle (of Wight) except seven hundred acres of land which I have sold to Thomas Pittman and Samuel Lancaster and three hundred acres of land which I have sold to Joseph Wall. All which said three parcels of land are part of the aforesaid Pattent and I do give and bequeath them to my loving brother John Allen and to heirs forever with intent that he may make over and conform the said three pieces of land to the said parties and their heirs forever as soon as possible he can after my death by such deeds and instruments of writing as their learned council in the law shall require which I do intreat and desire my said brother John Allen to do. I give and bequeath my negro slave Harry to my loving mother Katherine Allen for and during her natural life and immediately after her decease to my loving brother Joseph Allen and to his heirs forever. I give and bequeath to Margaret Coker, wife of John Coker, a thousand pounds of tobacco. I give and bequeath to my couzen Arthur Bridger when he comes to the age of one and twenty years to be then paid him by my Estate a small silver tankard of the value of four pounds sterling. I give and bequeath all the right and remainder of my personal estate to be equally divided between all my brothers and sisters viz: Elizabeth Bridger, wife of William Bridger, John Allen, Arthur Allen, Ann Allen, Mary Allen and Joseph Allen and it is my further will and desire that my said brothers and sisters may have, receive, and possess their several respective legacys above mentioned when they attain the age of eighteen years or marryed. It is my will and desire and I hereby nominate, constitute, and ordain my loving brother John Allen Executor of this my Last Will and Testament in testimony of all which I have hereunto set my hand and seale this 24th day of January 1711. The words (forever) in the eighteenth line and the word (between) in the forty-third were put in before signing and sealing. The last sentence beginning: "The words (forever) in the eighteenth line and the word (between)..." are part of the document and not added by me, the transcriber. However, I could not see the word "forever"in the 18th line but in the 20th and 21st. I see the word "between" in the 30th line and not again prior to signature.
