Surry Co., Virginia - Will It is weird but in all the info I have found it said the spelling was Sowerby but in the will for Francis it is definetly Shrousby. Later it was shorten to Sorsby. Francis's will was too hard to read so I just put the basic info in it. In the will it mentions his wife Katherine, son Francis and "any of my sons" daughters; Sarah, Elis and Jane Rix; brothers; Thomas and James. It was witnessed by Samuel Major and Thomas T. Shrousby Will set to his hand on November 8, 1678 and** Held for County of Surry March 4, 1678 and recorded March 22, 1678. To his Wife Katherine he leaves the Plantation and all privilages. Division of land provided when Son Francis becomes 21 and or any of his Sons. Sarah his daughter; three cows and calf, Eliz a cow and calf. and to every one of his sons living when the reach the age of 21. Brother Thomas he leaves a Gold Ring or Silver Spoon of ten shillings priced. Brother James a heifer and calf by her side. To his daughter Jane Rix a God Ring of 20 shillings priced and also to Sarah his daughter a mare foal the first that is borned. To Katherine his loving wife he gives all his Estate except what is mentioned above. **note ; these dates are not in error. B. 12 p. 174 Surry Co., Virginia Dated Nov 11, 1787 Probated January 22, 1788 In the name of God, Amen, I Thomas Sorsby of the County of Surry, being sick and weak, but of sound mind, memory, and understanding, and of disposing mind, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following and first and principally I recommend my Soul into the hands of Almighty God who gave it, and my Body after I depart hince, I desire may be buried in a Christian manner at the Discretion of my Executors hereafter named. Items I lend unto my beloved Wife Lucy Sorsby the use of the Plantation I now live in together with the land I purchased of William and Rebecca Simmonds during her life, but not to cut or clear any of the said land I purchased of the said Simmons more than is necessary for Firewood and T__rails. I also lend her the following Negroes to wit, Nan, Ratliff, Rachel, Ben and Ally during her life. I also lend her my Stock of all kinds, all my household and kitchen Furniture and Plantation Utensils untill my Daughter Sarah shall marry, except such as may hereafter be desived away to others and then I give and bequeath unto my said Daughter Sarah twelve head of cattle, twelve sheep, one choice of feather bed, and my bay colt, I also give and bequeath unto my Daughter Sarah the following Negroes to wit, Hannah, Will, Hund, Anthony, Anneke, and Claiborne, all which I desire she may have possession of whom she shall marry , and in the mean time I lend them unto my loving Wife, and desire that my said Daughter Sarah may remain with, and be supported by her. Item I give and bequeath unto my son in law John Southall, the land he now lives on which I bought of Stephen Sorsby, together with the Land commonly called Pulleys-- I also give him the following Negroes to wit. Lucy, Sylvia, Edmonds, Harry and Ephraim my ash colt, and my Still and Corn all which I give to him and to his Heirs for ever, Item At the death of my Wife, I desire that the lands I have lent to her may become the property of my Daughter Sarah, to her and her heirs for ever. I desire also that the Negroes, Stock, Household and Kitchen Furniture, and every thing else lent as aforesaid, except as before accepted, may be equally divided between my Daughter Sarah, and my son in law John Southall at my Wifes Death, to them and to their heirs forever. Provided nevertheless that should my Daughter Sarah die before she shall marry, that the lands, Negroes and every thing else I have devised to her may become the property of my grandson Francis Walker Southall and I desire the Negroes, Stock, and all the said property may be vested in his Father John Southall as Trustee and be continued in the lands given to him as aforesaid for the advantage of the said child. untill he shall arrive to the age of twenty one years, accept that part which I have lent unto my loving Wife, and at her death I desire that also my descend to the said Francis Walker Southall and be vested in the same manner, to him and his heirs forever. Item at the death of my Mother I desire that Harry a negro now at Henry Whites may become the property of Elizabeth White, (my sister) to her and to her heirs forever. Item, I give unto Thomas Sorsby, son of Stephen Sorsby my Buchanier Gun, to him and to his heirs forever Item. My will and desire is that all my Stock, Household and Kitchen Furniture and Plantation Utensils not already given away, may remain in possession of my loving Wife during her life, not with standing any thing before said contrary. I nominate and appoint my loving Wife Lucy Sorsby, my Son in law John Southall, and my friend James Kee my lawful Executors to say my Will performed.
