Deed - Benjamin Sammons to Joshua Thorpe 1786 (Deed Book F, page 512, Sussex Co.VA.) THIS INDENTURE made this 31 Day of March one thousand seven hundred & eighty six BETWEEN Benjamin Sammons of Sussex on the one part and Joshua Thorpe of Southampton on the other part WITNESSETH that the said Benjamin Sammons hath for and in consideration of the Sum of seventy nine pounds eighteen shillings current money of Virginia, to him in hand paid by the said Joshua Thorpe the receipt whereof the said Benjamin Sammons doth hereby acknowledge and confess Hath given granted bargained and sold and by these presents doth give grant bargain sell alien enfeoff and confirm unto the said Joshua Thorpe a certain tract or parcel of Land lying and being in the said County of Sussex, and bounded as followeth viz, Beginning at a small Sweet Gum on the S. side of Matthew Morgans Mill thence S.48 D.W.12 poles to a dead black gum thence by said Morgans line N.51 D.W.30 poles to a Sweet Gum on the side of Timber Tree Branch thence by a chopt Line up said Morgans Mill Pond to a Sweet Gum, a corner of James Sammons Land thence by said James Sammons Line S.24 D.W.to a White Oak a corner of said James Sammons thence N.76 D.W.10 pole & a half to a red oak a corner of Thomas Avents Land in said James Sammons Line, thence by said Avents Line S.10 D.W.66 pole to a red oak thence S.54 D.E.100 pole to a large Hickory a corner of said Thorpes old Land thence by his old line N.32 D.E.132 pole to a Sweet Gum by the side of the great swamp thence up the great swamp as it meanders to the Beginning containing ninety nine acres be the same more or less TO HAVE AND TO HOLD the said tract or parcel of Land and premises with all & singular the appurtenances thereunto belonging to the said Joshua Thorpe his heirs and assigns to the only proper use and behoof of him the said Joshua Thorpe his Heirs & assigns forever and the said Benjamin Sammons for himself his Heirs the aforesaid tract or parcel of Land to the said Joshua Thorpe shall & will warrant & forever defend from the claim property or Demand of any person or persons whatsoever AS WITNESS whereof I the said Benjamin Sammons hath hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal the Date above written.
