ATKINSON DIED WEDNESDAY AT DENDRON HOME Mr. Archer A. Atkinson, age 82, died suddenly Wednesday afternoon, July 15 at his home in Dendron. He was the oldest citizen of Dendron, member of Dendron Christian Church and a retired employee of the Surry Lumber Co. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Neal Faison Atkinson; one daughter, Mrs. Clyde C. Hart of Colonial Heights; one son, Seith Atkinson of Franklin; three granddaughters, three grandsons, eight great-grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Mattie S. Hart of Dendron and Mrs. W.L. Anderson of Richmond and two brothers, E.T. Atkinson of Dendron and J.T. Atkinson of Waverly. Funeral services will be held today (Friday) in the Dendron Christian Church at 3:00 P.M. with burial in the Wakefield Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Jesse Atkinson, William Marshall Atkinson, Garland Spratley, David Steele, Enos Hargrave, Edwin Barrett, Wilfred Barrett and Charlie A. Atkinson, 82, a former engineer for the Surry Lumber Company, died suddenly at his home in Dendron on Wednesday, July 15. A member of Dendron Christian Church, he was believed to be the oldest resident of the Dendron community. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Neal Faison Atkinson of Dendron; a son, Seith Atkinson of Franklin; a daughter, Mrs. Clyde C. Hart of Colonial Heights; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Mattie S. Hart of Dendron and Mrs. W.L. Anderson of Richmond; and two brother[s], E.G. Atkinson of Dendron and J.T. Atkinson of Waverly. Funeral rites for Mr. Atkinson were conducted at the Dendron Christian Church on Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock by Rev. Ritchie Brittle, with music by the church choir. Burial was in the Wakefield Cemetery, nephews of the deceased serving as pallbearers. ****************************************************************************** Archer A. Tom and Margaret (West) Atkinson. The D.Certs. of bros Charlie & John give their mother as Margaret Ann West; They are also buried in Wakefield Cemetery. The D.Cert. & (donated, 1966) obit of bro Edward T. "Sam" ATKINSON - last engineer of the S.S.S. R.R. - both give son of Thomas and Martha West Atkinson. Sam is also buried in Wakefield Cemetery. Their father, Joseph Thomas ATKINSON, was a Confederate veteran, having risen from the ranks to become first sergeant & color bearer of Co. B, 10th VA Heavy Artillery. He applied for a pension in 1908.
