Born in Isle of Wight County, he was employed 12 years as a maintenance mechanic for the Fiber Division of Allied Chemical Corp., Hopewell, before he retired in 1981. He was a member of Wakefield United Methodist Church. He served the church as chairman of its Board of Trustees, and a member of its Administrative Board and as a Sunday school teacher. He was a member and past master of Wakefield Masonic Lodge 198; a past patron of Waverly Chapter 172 of the Order of Eastern Star; and an Army Veteran. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Barbara Hargrave Atkins; two sons, William Douglas Atkins and Keith Franklin Atkins, both of Wakefield; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jack E. Atkins, Sr. of Ivor; three sisters, Mrs. Ethel A. Owen of Suffolk, Mrs. Alice A. Lowe of Richmond and Mrs. Rebecca A. Maifeld of Wakefield; and four brothers, Albert F. Atkins of Williamsburg, John A. Atkins of Glasgow, Ky., Jack E. Atkins, Jr. of Ivor and Robert L. Atkins of Wakefield. A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in Wakefield United Methodist Church by the Rev. James M. Tongue, who will be assisted by the Rev. Steven Edwards. Burial with Masonic rites will be in Wakefield Cemetery. The family will receive friends in Purviance Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 tonight and requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Wakefield United Methodist Church. ****************************************************************************** WILLIAM FRANKLIN ATKINS WAKEFIELD - A funeral service for William Franklin Atkins, 47, was held Sunday at 3 p.m. in Wakefield United Methodist Church by the Revs. James Tongue and Steven Edwards. Burial with Masonic rites was in Wakefield Cemetery with Purviance Funeral Home in charge. Atkins died Thursday in a hospital. A native of Isle of Wight County, he was the husband of Barbara Hargrave Atkins and was an Army veteran. He had retired from Allied Chemicals fiber division plant as a maintenance mechanic after 13 years. He was a member of Wakefield United Methodist Church, where he was chairman of the board of trustee, a member of the administration board and had taught the young men's Bible class for eight years. He was past master of Wakefield Masonic Lodge No. 198, A.F.& A.M., and past patron of Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 172 in Waverly. Other survivors include two sons, William Douglas Atkins and Keith Franklin Atkins, both of Wakefield; his parents, Jack E. and Frances Joyner Atkins of Ivor; the sisters, Ethel Owen of Suffolk, Alice A. Lowe of Richmond and Rebecca A. Maifield of Wakefield; and four brothers, Albert F. Atkins of Williamsburg, Jack E. Atkins Jr. of Ivor, John A. Atkins of Kentucky and Robert L. Atkins of Wakefield.
