"Pete" Beale, 82, a lifelong resident of Wakefield, Va., died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003. Born April 18, 1920, he was a son of the late Willie A. Beale and Edna Harvell Beale. Pete retired from Presson & Warthan Co., in Waverly and was a member of the Wakefield Ruritan Club. A dedicated member of the Wakefield United Methodist Church he served as Treasurer for 14 years, was a member of the Methodist Men, was a member of the Administrative Board of Trustees, and served as Custodian for 32 years. He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Joyce A. Beale; two sons, Wayne Beale and wife, Sarah, of Suffolk, Va., David Beale and wife, Kathy of Prince George, Va.; one daughter, Janet James and husband Sidney, of Richmond, Va.; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Beale, Liza James, Mary Buford Janes, Ryan Beale, Blair Beale, Will Beale, Hunter Beale and Taylor Beale; two brothers, Cecil L. "Buck" Beale and Jack Beale, both of Waverly; two sisters, Evelyn Crenshaw of Richmond, Va., and Fay Worrell of Wakefield; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother Robert Lee Beale, and a sister, Dorothy B. Seward. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, with the Rev. Jim Becker officiating. Interment will follow in Wakefield Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday evening at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wakefield United Methodist Church Building Fund, Wakefield, VA 23888 or Waverly Vol. Rescue Squad, Waverly, VA 23890. ****************************************************************************** THE HISTORY OF OUR (ROCKY HOCK) CHURCH PEWS: "GIVEN BY MR. AND MRS. A.W. BEALE" Albert Wayne [sic; Wilson] "Pete" Beale (1920 - 2003) married Joyce Arnold from Waverly in 1946. They were married for 56 years. Pete was one of seven children; four boys - Pete, "Buck," Jack and "Dick"; and three girls - Mary Evelyn, Dorothy and Fay. Pete and his brother helped to form a very good semi-pro baseball team from the Wakefield-Waverly area following World War II. Whey Pete and Joyce were first married, Pete farmed and they lived at the Robertson farm (Cedar Grove). They had three children: Wayne, Janet and David. Pete and his family moved to the Faison farm into the little house on the road in site of Rocky Hock Church, diagonal from Boots and Gaynelle Whitmore’s driveway. While living in Little Surry, they attended Rocky Hock Church. After farming for several years, they moved into the town of Wakefield. Peter worked for Sussex Oil Company and Joyce worked at the drug store in Wakefield for many years. They were faithful member of Wakefield United Methodist Church. Pete was responsible for the maintenance, cleaning and security of the church with Joyce's help, until his health forced him to retire. Joyce has eight grandchildren and five great-grandsons with a sixth great-grandson expected at any time. Pete is buried in Wakefield Cemetery. Thanks to Joyce Beale for the picture and information.
