Born in Sussex County, she was a member of Keysville United Methodist Church. She was a 1927 graduate of Randolph Macon Women's College and was a former Sussex County public school teacher. A former Red Cross volunteer, she was an executive secretary for the Virginia Tuberculosis Association for more than 20 years. In 1972, the Virginia Rehabilitation Association gave her an award for extraordinary service. She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Daughters of American Revolution. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Rhita Lewis Bailey McNair of Houston; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Keysville United Methodist Church by the Rev. John Coffey and the Rev. Kim Hull. A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday in Wakefield Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Montrose Farm in Sussex County after the burial. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Keysville Rescue Squad or the Patrick Henry Boy’s Home in Charlotte County. Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield is in charge. ****************************************************************************** MARGUERITE SHELTON STEPHENSON BAILEY Marguerite Shelton Stephenson Bailey, 79, of Keysville, died Tuesday, December 4, 1984 at Johnston-Willis Hospital in Richmond. Born March 16, 1905 in Sussex Co., Va., she was the daughter of Robert H. Stephenson Sr. and Maggie Shelton Stephenson. She graduated in 1927 from Randolph Macon Women's College and taught school in Sussex Co. prior to her marriage June 23, 1928 to James Reginald Bailey M.D. of Keysville. She was actively involved in many service organizations (e.g. The Red Cross) prior to the death of her husband in 1944. For more than 20 years, she served as executive secretary of the Va. Tuberculosis Assoc., Richmond. In 1972, she was honored by the Va. Rehabilitation Assoc. for her many years of extraordinary service to that organization. In 1973, she returned to Keysville where she was actively involved in community service, the Keysville United Methodist Church and the Senior Citizens' Organization until the time of her death. She was a member of both the U.D.C. and the D.A.R. Survivors include one daughter, Rhita Lewis Bailey McNair: a son-in-law, Thomas P. McNair; two grandchildren, Daniel S. McNair and Maggie M. Huggins; two great grandsons, Micah and Shane Huggins, all of Houston, TX; a large and devoted family; and a host of friends. A memorial service will be held at the Keysville United Methodist Church 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 7, 1984 by Rev. John Coffey and Rev. Kim Hull. Interment will be in the Wakefield Cemetery in Sussex Co. following a graveside service at 3 p.m. also on Friday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Keysville Fescue Squad or the Patrick Henry Boys' Home in Charlotte Co. The family will receive friends at Keysville residence on Thursday and at Montrose in Sussex Co. Friday after the burial. Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, is in charge of arrangements.
