Born in Gates County, N.C., he was a retired Southampton County farmer and a member of Millfield Baptist Church, Southampton County. Survivors include two sons, Johnnie W. Ballard of Ivor and James E. Ballard of Wakefield; a sister, Mrs. Mildred B. Holt of Suffolk; two brothers, Frank Ballard of Ivor and J.T. Ballard of Virginia Beach; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Purviance Funeral Home Chapel, Wakefield, by the Rev. R.E. Brittle and the Rev. Frank Crawford. Burial will be in Wakefield Cemetery. The family will be at the residence, Main Street, Wakefield. He was tried, convicted, and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
