All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ BARRY DOUGLAS BRIGGS SANFORD, N.C. - Barry "Doug" Douglas Briggs Sr., 83, died Dec. 10, 2002 at Central Carolina Hospital. He now joins his wife of 60 years, the late Catherine "Kitty" Davis Briggs, and daughter, the late Catherine "Kay" Briggs Magee. Born on Jan. 6, 1919, he was the son of the late George and Margaret Briggs. A native of Wise County, he came to Homeville in 1932 and graduated from Waverly High School in 1936. He received a B.S. degree in agriculture from Virginia Tech in 1941. From 1941 to 1946, he served as captain in the Army and was discharged with the rank of major. He operated his own farm machinery business, Wakefield Equipment Company, for many years. He was a member of Wakefield United Methodist Church, Wakefield Masonic Lodge and the England-Parsons Post of the American Legion. He is survived by his children, Barry Douglas Briggs, Jr. and wife, Jo of Pittsboro, N.C., Ann Briggs Lipscomb and husband David of Grayson, Ga.; Don Alan Briggs and wife Ronetta of Dallas, Texas and Ellen Briggs Bruton and husband Rodney of Chester, Va. His grandchildren include, D. Laine Magee, D. Michael Magee, Molly M. Dowless, Casey L. Self, Sarah D. Lipscomb, John B. Briggs, Catherine "Catie" Briggs and Benjamin D. Briggs. A funeral will be conducted in Purviance Funeral Home Chapel, Wakefield Saturday at 2 p.m. Interment will follow in Wakefield Cemetery. Robert W. Bruton will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Central Virginia Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 5001 W. Broad St., Suite 220, Richmond, VA 23230.
