WAKEFIELD - James Nicholas Barker, Jr., 58, a resident of Wakefield, died Sunday, April 5, 1998, at his home. He was in the Class of 1962, Virginia Military Institute; received his master’s degree in aerospace operations management from the University of Southern California in 1967; and was a 1974 graduate of Washington & Lee School of Law. He served as captain in the U.S. Air Force from 1965 to 1972. During active duty, he taught Air Force ROTC at VMI for three years. For the past 21 years, he was a respected trial attorney in the general practice of law in Waverly and was Wakefield town attorney for over 20 years. He served as president and member of the Sussex County Bar Association, and was a member of the Virginia State Bar Association and the 6th Judicial Circuit Bar Association. Active in a variety of community and church organizations through-out his life, he had served as senior warden, treasurer, and choir member at Christ Episcopal Church, Waverly. He made Cursillo No. 27, Diocese of Southern Virginia, and was lay director for the Secretariat of Cursillo, Diocese of Southern Virginia. He was past president of the Wakefield Ruritan Club, chairman of the Sussex Democratic Committee for over 20 years, and past chairman of District 19 Community Service Board. He was on the board of directors of the Jackson Field Home and Waverly Volunteer Rescue Squad. Jim was a lifelong New York Yankees fan and a baseball trivia expert and enjoyed singing as a member of the Dominion Singers and other choral groups. Survivors include his wife, Peggy Coddington Barker; son, Todd Nicholas Barker of Los Angeles, Calif.; two daughters, Lisa Counts Barker of Los Angeles, Calif., and Karen Burch Barker of Richmond; his mother, Louise Burch Barker of Wakefield; a sister, Carolyn Barker Gedris of Layton, Utah; and two nieces and two nephews. His father was the late James Nicholas Barker, Sr. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 8, at 2 p.m. at Wakefield United Methodist Church by the Rev. Macon Walton. Burial will be in Wakefield Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening at Purviance Funeral Home in Wakefield from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Waverly Volunteer Rescue Squad or to Christ Episcopal Church, Waverly, Va. 23890.
