He was born in Southampton County and retired from Cogsdale Implement Company in 1981. He served as deacon, trustee, Sunday school superintendent and teacher in the Wakefield Congregational Christian Church. He was a member of Wakefield Masonic Lodge No. 198 AF&AM. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Leigh Seward Brittle; two sons, Horace Lee Brittle Sr. of Waverly, and James R. Brittle of Atlanta, GA.; three sisters, Mrs. Doris B. Murphy of Wakefield, Mrs. Lula B. Hughes of Richmond, and Mrs. Clarice B. Kotz of Suffolk; a brother, J.C. Brittle of Hampton; and four grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. today at Purviance Funeral Chapel, Wakefield, by the Revs. E. Lee Chattin and Parker Hooper. Burial will be in Wakefield Cemetery with Masonic rites. The family will receive friends at the residence of Horace Lee Brittle Sr. in Waverly. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to American Cancer Society or Waverly Rescue Squad.
