She was a native of Surry County. Mrs. Brittle was a member of Wakefield Christian Church, where she taught Sunday school for a number of years and was a member of the choir. She was also a member of Wakefield Woman’s Club. Survivors include two sons, Horace L. Brittle Sr. of Waverly and James "Randy" Brittle of Columbus, Miss.; her mother, Lelia Ellis Seward of Wakefield; two sisters, Ann B. Cobb of Wakefield and Virginia S. Thacker of Smithfield; a brother E. Baxter Seward of Elberon; and four grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Purviance Funeral Home and at other times at the residence of Horace L. Brittle, Jr. in Waverly. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home by the Rev. Parker Hooper and the Rev. Paul Harfst. Burial will be in Wakefield Cemetery. The request that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Waverly Rescue Squad, Waverly 23890; or the American Cancer Society, c/o Isabelle Norris, East Main Street, Waverly 23890. ****************************************************************************** MARY LEIGH SEWARD BRITTLE Mrs. Mary Leigh Seward Brittle, 69, of Church Street in Wakefield died Saturday morning, April 27, 1991, in Waverly Health Care Center. She was the widow of John Samuel Brittle. She was a native of Surry County, the daughter of the late H.E. Seward. She was a member of Wakefield Christian Church where she taught Sunday school for a number of years and was a member of the choir. She also was a member of the Wakefield Woman's Club. Survivors include two sons, Horace Lee Brittle Sr. of Waverly, James "Randy" Brittle of Colombus, MI; mother, Lelia Ellis Seward of Wakefield; two sisters, Ann B. Cobb of Wakefield and Virginia S. Thacker of Smithfield; a brother, E. Baxter Seward of Elberon; and four grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at Purviance Funeral Home 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, officiated by Rev. Parker Hooper and Rev. Paul Harfst with interment to follow in Wakefield Cemetery.
