She was the widow of Mac D. Barnes and was a Gold Star Mother, a member of the Alexandria, Va. District of the American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. Mrs. Barnes owned and operated Barnes Grocery in Wakefield until she retired. She has made her home in Wakefield for the past 29 years. Prior to that, in Petersburg for 25 years. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. J.V. Thomas, Sr. of Wakefield; two granddaughters, Mrs. B.W. Peoples, Virginia Beach, and Miss Noreen Hale of Chicago; three grandsons, J.V. Thomas, Jr. of Chester, David and Marvin Hale, both of San Angelo, Texas; seven great-grandchildren, Sp-3 Steve Peoples, U.S. Army in Texas, Charles Peoples, Lorrie and Kathy Peoples, all of Virginia Beach, Joanne and Jennifer Thomas, both of Chester, Michael Hale of San Angelo. Mrs. Barnes was the mother of three deceased sons, Joseph and Lawrence Hale, both of whom died of wounds in WWII and Charles Hale. Funeral service will be conducted Thursday, June 4, at 2 P.M. from Purviance Funeral Chapel in Wakefield. L.P. Bland. Burial will be in Wakefield Cemetery. Pallbearers: Greggor Huber, James Renney, S.I. Jenkins, Truitt Garrett, R.T. Scott, and J.N. Savedge. Mrs. Barnes died Tuesday in John Randolph Hospital, Hopewell. A native of Sussex county, she was the wife of Mac D. Barnes She was a member of Crowder Memorial Baptist Church, Petersburg, and Alexandria District of American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. Survivors by a daughter, Mrs. J.V. The households are confused by the census enumerator - Mattie originally listed with the JONES family (#81), rather than husband W. Henry LEE and their children (#82). (1900 Census - Belfield Dist. (#29), Greensville Co., VA - sheet 5B) Rebecca's first husband, Joseph Henry HALE, sn/o Joseph Powell & Virginia** (MYRICK) HALE {both "b. Southampton Co."), was b. 8 Jun 1883 in Sussex Co., and died 7 Apr 1940 in Petersburg, and his remains were removed to Jarratt. (D.Cert. #8989 {Ptbg. #136}) He 1m. 12 Nov 1901 in Dinwiddie Co., Mary Parthenia HADDON. (FamilySearch.org "Virginia Marriages") Confusingly, Joseph & Rebecca {transcribed "Rebice"} appear in the 1940 Census in Ward 1, Petersburg (e.d. 115-3), enum. 12-13 Apr; she was marked as widowed, but "Wd" was struck & "M" {married} inserted. **Jos.P.
