A retired Surry County farmer, he was an Army veteran of World War I, a member of Surry American Legion Post and Surry United Methodist Church. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Nancy Bell Cox; three sons, H. Lawson Cox; and Melvin D. Cox of Elbron, and Carlton B. Cox of Suffolk; one sister, Mrs. Lillian C. Johnson of Richmond; two brothers, Leonard E. Cox of Smithfield and Robert E. Cox of Richmond; and 10 grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. today in Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, by the Rev. R.C. Black and the Rev. P.R. Hart. Burial will be in Wakefield Cemetery. The family request expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Surry Rescue Squad.
