A native and lifelong resident of Surry County, he served as sheriff for 28 years until his retirement in 1967. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Mary White Cockes; one son, Elbert Dixon Cockes of Elberon; one sister, Mrs. Otys Blanchard Watson of Portsmouth; and four grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Wakefield Cemetery by Dr. R.E. Brittle and the Rev. J.L. Blackwell. The requests expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the rescue squads of Sussex or Surry Counties. Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, is in charge.
