W.L. DEVANY WAKEFIELD - Jan. 10 - Wakefield Methodist Church was packed to over-flowing Wednesday at funeral services for Dr. W.L. Devany, widely popular Surry County physician, who died at his home in Dendron Tuesday after a long illness. The services were conducted at 3 o’clock in the afternoon by the Rev. William Boggs, pastor of Wakefield Methodist Church and the Rev. William Brayshaw, pastor of Smithfield Methodist Church. The church choir sang "Just As I Am" and "Abide With Me." The floral offerings were unusually numerous and beautiful. Burial was in Wakefield Cemetery. Active pallbearers were R.A. Savedge, Carlton Holliday, Ralph James, J.S. White, Crawley Maynard and Walter H. Rogers. Honorary pallbearers, some forty in number, included county officials, friends and associates of Dr. Devany in his nearly fifty years in the practice of medicine and surgery in Surry County. Dr. Walter Leslie DEVANY, retired physician, b. 15 Oct 1858, Southampton Co., d. 6 Jan 1931, at home, Dendron, interred in Wakefield Cemetery*, 7 Jan 1931, "Richmond (VA) Times-Dispatch," Jan. 11, 1931, p. 6 *His sister Frances R. (DEVANY; Mrs. Samuel J.) DREWRY, is also buried there.
