ELLIS, CIVIC LEADER, IS BURIED Funeral services for Dr. Stanley Burt Ellis, 65, who died on Friday in Petersburg Hospital, were conducted Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Wakefield Cemetery by the Rev. John E. White and the Rev. Samuel L. Dumville, pastors of the Baptist and Methodist churches of Wakefield. Pallbearers were R.M. Cobb, B.R. Carson, F.E. Branch, Geo. L. Munford, J.L. Long, Walter A. Stephenson, W.M. Leech and James Cooper. Dr. Ellis, a native of Sussex County, came to Wakefield in 1907 to practice medicine. In 1937, he suffered a heart attack but continued to practice until 1941 when he had a stroke of paralysis and was forced to retire. A true sportsman, the deceased was past president of the Virginia Fox Hunters Association and organizers and first president of the Wakefield Community Hunt Club, which office he held at the time of his death. He aided in organizing and for several years managed the Wakefield Baseball team which was looked upon as one of the cleanest playing and best organized teams in this section. As a lover of horses, he did much to revive ring tournament riding in this section. The fact that the Wakefield Annual community Day still features the tournament is a monument to his industry. He is survived by three sisters, Mrs. W.V. West, Miss Norma Elis, and Mrs. M.S. Williams, all of Waverly, and three brothers, A.S. Ellis, of Waverly; K.N. Ellis, of Petersburg; and Colonel W.R. Ellis, of Washington, D.C. ****************************************************************************** DR. STANLEY BURT ELLIS DR. S.B.
