Wilbur Russell Ellis, 78, USA (ret.), of Waverly, an Army veteran with 28 years’ service, died Wednesday at Camp Lee Hospital after a short illness. Col. Ellis, a veteran of both world wars, was a Sussex County native and a Baptist. Retiring in 1948, he was a holder of the Legion of Merit, one of the top non-combat decorations. A son of Stanley V. and Sarah Burt Ellis, he survived by his wife, Mrs. Miriam Pond Ellis; two sons, Dr. W.R. Ellis Jr. of Salisbury, Md.; and Lee Burt Ellis of Annandale; a daughter, Mrs. E.M. Babb Jr., of West Lafayette, Ind.; a sister, Mrs. Christine Williams of Waverly and 9 grandchildren. The funeral was held at Purviance Funeral Chapel, at 2 p.m. with burial at the Waverly Cemetery. The Rev. R.L. Consolvo officiated. Pallbearers were Birch Redford, L. Ray Ashworth, V.W. Hines, Don P. Chamblee, Emerson Babb III, Paul Babb, Moyler Pond, Ken Ellis, Jr. and John Ellis. Col.
