GAY, 91, DIES at WAKEFIELD WAKEFIELD - Dec. 23 - Felix Waverly Gay, 91, died Tuesday at his home here. He was a member of Wakefield’s first town council and also served as the town’s treasurer. He was a member of Wakefield Baptist Church and served as superintendent of the Sunday school for 30 years. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Virgie Freeman Gay; a brother, Samuel Lee Gay of Richmond and two sisters, Mrs. Hattie L. Evans and Mrs. Mollie Holloway of Petersburg. Funeral rites will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, with burial in Wakefield Cemetery. ****************************************************************************** FELIX WAVERLY GAY FELIX GAY, 91, DIED TUESDAY Felix Waverly Gay, 91, and one of the oldest Wakefield residents, died December 22 at his home in Wakefield after 3 weeks illness. He was a native of Sussex County and retired at the age of 80 as bookkeeper and salesman for Stephenson’s Furniture Store where he had worked for 40 years. He was the son of the late Indiana Elizabeth Clary Gay and Decator Washington Gay. He was a teacher in Wakefield Baptist Church Sunday School. He served as auditor for the Petersburg Baptist Association for 50 years, and served ten years as treasurer of the town of Wakefield. He was a member of the first Town council. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Virgie Freeman Gay, of Wakefield; two sisters, Mrs. Hattie Lucile Evans, of Petersburg; and Mrs. Millie Holloway, of Petersburg; one brother, Samuel Lee Gay, of Richmond, and three nephews and two nieces. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 24 at 2:30 p.m. at the Purviance Funeral Chapel with Rev. D.M. Cotter and L.P. Bland, officiating. Burial will be in Wakefield Cemetery. Pallbearers will be J.N. Savedge, J.N. Barker, S.I. Jenkins, E.A. Hatch, C.H. Traylor, Sr., Herman Whitfield, Herbert Hatch and Hartwell Stephenson.
