GOODRICH, WAKEFIELD DIES WAKEFIELD - April 1 - Cephus Gurney Goodrich, 61, an inventor of farm machinery, died Friday in a Richmond hospital. Besides developing the Goodrich cultivator, he invented the Goodrich peanut digger, which had been put to wide use in the South. A native of Surry County, Mr. Goodrich had lived in Wakefield since 1925. He was a member of Rocky Hock Methodist Church, Surry County. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Leda Whitmore Goodrich; two sons, W. Elwood and C. Edwin Goodrich, of Wakefield; two daughters, Mrs. Morris Ellis and Mrs. C.H. Traylor, Jr., of Wakefield; three brothers, J.G. and B.J. Goodrich, of Wakefield, and J.A. Goodrich, of Suffolk; two sisters, Mrs. Annie Brittle and Mrs. Ida Rogers, of Wakefield, and six grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the residence, with burial in Wakefield Cemetery. ****************************************************************************** C. G. Goodrich, Farm Inventor, Dies In Wakefield Wakefield - Cephas Gurney Goodrich, 61, died April 1st in a Richmond hospital after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Goodrich was a native of Surry County and had lived here since 1926. He was well known for his success in perfecting improved models of farm machinery. He patented the Goodrich cultivator and the Goodrich peanut picker, both widely used throughout the South. He was a member of Rocky Hock Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Leda Whitmore Goodrich; two sons, W. Elwood Goodrich and C. Edwin Goodrich; two daughters, Mrs. Morris Ellis and Mrs. C.H. Traylor Jr., all of Wakefield; six grandchildren; three brothers, J.G. and B.J. Goodrich, of Wakefield, and J.A. Goodrich, of Suffolk; two sisters. Mrs. Annie Brittle, and Mrs. Ida Rogers, both of Wakefield, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted at the home residence Sunday at 3 P.M. Goodrich, [sic] Wakefield Inventor Buried Sunday ["->Apr. 3_" handwritten] Funeral services for C.G. Goodrich, of Wakefield, who died Friday morning of last week in a Richmond hospital, were held at the graveside, Sunday afternoon, April 28 [struck, "3" handwritten], at the Wakefield Cemetery. Rev. L.P. Bland, officiating minister, was assisted by Dr. J.E. White and Rev. C.E. Gerringer. A quartet of Junior Seeley, William Eure, Jack Beale and Sydney Brittle sang "Sometime We'll Understand." Mr. Goodrich was born in Surry County July 9, 1893, but had been a resident of Wakefield, where he had operated an outstanding rural machine shop since 1925. He was well known for his success in perfecting improved models of farm machinery, having invented and patented the Goodrich cultivator and the Goodrich peanut digger. The latter machine has been widely used throughout the South and is considered to be one of the best implements of its kind. He was a member of Rocky Hock Church. In addition to his wife, Mrs. Leda Whitmore Goodrich, he is survived by two sons, W.E. and C.E. Goodrich; two daughters, Mrs. Morris Ellis and Mrs. C.H. Traylor, Jr.; three brothers, J.G. and B.J. Goodrich, of Wakefield, and J.A. Goodrich, of Suffolk; two sisters, Mrs. Ida Rogers and Mrs. Annie Brittle; six grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Active pallbearers were Stanley Brantley, Lee Sowder, M.M. Holt, T.L. Brittle, S.I. Jenkins, Henry Ellis, William Leech and W.C. Seeley.
