All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ CLARENCE WAYNE GRIFFIN, SR. 02-22-1934 - 12-27-2015 Resided in Wakefield Clarence Wayne Griffin, Sr. "Jack", 81, of Wakefield passed away December 27, 2015. He was the son of the late Walter Clarence Griffin and Fannie Laine Griffin. Jack graduated from Wakefield High School and furthered his education at the University of Richmond and later, the University of Georgia where he received his BS and Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine grading in 1959. He was employed by the State of Virginia through the Department of Agriculture where he served for 37 years, retiring as Assistant State Veterinarian in Richmond, Virginia. During his service with the state, Jack was the first Director of the Airfield 4-H Conference Center in Wakefield. Jack was also instrumental in eradicating Cholera in swine and Brucellosis in cattle in the state of Virginia. Jack was a member and a past president of Wakefield Community Hunt Club, a member of Wakefield Sportsman Club where he had served as chairman of the Annual Shad Planking, and a member of the Wakefield Ruritan Club. He served as Vice Chairman of the first Ducks Unlimited Annual Dinner & Auction in 1986 and a member of Pheasant Pluckers' International 1962. Jack also served on the Wakefield Town Council and as Mayor of The Town of Wakefield from 1976- 1982. Jack served on several boards over the years, some of which include Tidewater Academy where he had served as President of the Board, Chippokes Plantation State Park, The State Fair of Virginia, The Bank of Waverly and Chincoteague's Annual Pony Swim where he was instrumental in saving many horses, working directly under Governor Mills E. Godwin. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Ernestine "Tina" Ross Griffin, his sons, Clarence Wayne Griffin, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Susan Griffin and Ross Laine Griffin and daughter-in-law (to be) Heather Hill and is grandchildren, Reagan Wayne Griffin, Whitney DeAnne Griffin (to be), Alexis Watkins and Allie Watkins. The family will receive friends Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home, Wakefield Chapel from 6 to 8:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Wakefield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wakefield Fire Department, 155 Fleetwood Ave., Wakefield, VA. 23888 or to Wakefield United Methodist Church, P.O. 87, Wakefield, VA 23888.
