Higgins Jr., a former co-owner of Higgins Brothers Lumber Co., died yesterday in Prince George County. [sic; Petersburg*] He was 71. A native of Dendron, Mr. Higgins moved with his family to Waverly at an early age and graduated from Waverly High School. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and was on the football team there. Mr. Higgins started working at Gray Lumber Co. in Waverly in the late 1930s. In 1943 he and his brothers, Horace R. and William A., opened Higgins Brothers Lumber Co. They sold the business in 1978. Mr. Higgins was a member of Waverly United Methodist Church and a former member of the Waverly Ruritan Club. He was the widower of Mrs. Dorothy Bailey Higgins. Survivors include a son, O. Paul Higgins III of Petersburg; a brother, Horace R. Higgins of Waverly; a sister, Mrs. Martha H. Coulbourn of Suffolk; and two grandchildren. A funeral service will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Waverly United Methodist Church with burial following at the Waverly cemetery. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Sussex Unit, American Cancer Society, c/o Isabelle Norris, Waverly, Va. 23890, or to the charity of the donor's choice.
