All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Memorial Funeral For Waverly Captain A memorial service will be held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Waverly Methodist Church for the late Captain William A. Higgins, of Waverly, a brother of Mrs. Edwin Coulbourn, of Suffolk, who was killed in action on the West coast of Korea on January 15. Captain Higgins, of the First Marine Air Wing, was the son of Mrs. O.P. Higgins, Sr., of Waverly and the late Mr. Higgins. He graduated from Waverly High School after which he attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg, where he entered the Naval Training program. He received his wings January 1944 at the Naval Air Training Center Pensacola, Florida, and was commissioned a lieutenant in the Air Wing Marine Corps. During World War II he saw service in the Hawaiian Islands, Saipan, and Guam. Returning to civilian life in 1946 he was recalled to active duty October 1951. He went to Korea in November of 1952. Higgins was a prominent young business man in Waverly, where he was a partner in the Higgins Brothers Lumber Co. The Rev. Raymond Carson, assisted by the Rev. Courtney Sheffield, will conduct the service Sunday afternoon. The family has requested that flowers please be omitted. His parents, Obed Paul & Rosa May (ROGERS) HIGGINS, are buried in Waverly Cemetery. He m. Erna INGRAM, 26 Apr 1944 in Nansemond Co. (Surry Co. license) His widow (1924 - 2015) 2m. Dr. Richard Ovid ROGERS, Jr., William's nephew, but is buried in Waverly Cemetery. Richard (1926 - 2008) is buried with his parents in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Bluefield, Mercer Co., WV.
