She was the widow of Randall Lee Hyre. Born Nov. 5, 1923, in Ragland, Ala., she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Lindy Mae Higgenbotham Summers. In 1944, Ruth joined the U.S. Navy. Serving her country proudly, she was awarded the World War II Victory Ribbon and American Campaign Ribbon before her honorable discharge in July 1946. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Tidewater Academy Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 1000, Wakefield, VA 23888. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 1, 2009, in Wakefield Cemetery, with the Rev. Jim Keer officiating. Purviance Chapel, J.T.
