All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ ELWOOD LEE HARRIS WAKEFIELD - Elwood Lee Harris, 83, a native and lifelong resident of Wakefield, died Monday, March 6, 2000, in Southampton Memorial Hospital, Franklin, after a period of declining health. He was the son of the late Henry L. Harris and Bessie Hargrave Harris. Elwood served as town clerk and treasurer for the town of Wakefield from 1956 to 1976. He was a member of Wakefield Congregational Christian Church; a former member of Wakefield Ruritan Club; a member of the Wakefield Masonic Lodge No. 198 A.F. & A.M.; a 32nd Degree Mason; a Shriner; and a member of the ACCA Temple, Scottish Rite, Richmond. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was a 1937 graduate of VPI and was a member of the General William Mahone Camp, Sons of Confederate Veterans, Wakefield. Mr. Harris is a survived by his wife of 58 years, Verna Katherine Carwile Harris; two sons, Glen S. Harris, and wife, Alice, of Keystone Heights, Fla., and Donald L. Harris, and his wife, Deborah, of Moneta; and three grandchildren, Christopher Ryan Harris, Matthew Lee Harris and Ellen Margaret Harris. Funeral services will be held in the Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 9, with Dr. David G. Brown, Jr., officiating. Burial will be in Wakefield Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence, 113 Wilson Ave., Wakefield. Memorial donations may be made to the Ivor Volunteer Rescue Squad or the Waverly Volunteer Rescue Squad.
