Newport News resident for over 60 years, he was the son of the late George Wesley and Lucy Hancock Hargrave. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was awarded the World War II Victory Medal; the American Theater Medal; the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with two Bronze Stars; the Philippine Liberation Medal; and the Good Conduct Medal. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 32 years of service as a special delivery messenger. He also worked at Home Brothers for seven years and was a member of the VFW Post 176 in Newport News. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Helen Furr Hargrave; four daughter, Phyllis Barfield of Smithfield and Sharon Cole, Debbie Jones and Lynn Kirkland, all of Hampton; four sons-in-law, Bob Barfield, Jim Cole, Jack Jones and Bill Kirkland; four grandchildren, Corry Colle, Jr., Michael Barfield, John Jones, III and Sarah Kirkland; one sister Edith H. Farmer of Colorado; a cousin, JoAnna Bowers of Georgie; and many nieces and nephews. He was the nephew of the late Miss Etta Hancock of Wakefield, who resided with Mr. Hargrave and his wife, Helen. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 31, at 3 p.m. at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield Chapel, by Rev. Jerry Edwards. Interment will follow at Wakefield Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Helen Hargrave tonight. In lieu of flowers, the family request expression of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Intensive Care Unit or the Dialysis Unit of Sentara Hampton General Hospital, attention Pat Gray, 3021 Victoria Blvd., Hampton 23661.
