He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Austin Horton. Born in Nansemond County, he was the owner and operator of Horton’s Furniture Store in Wakefield and the first manager of the Waverly A&P Grocery Store. He was a member of the Waverly Baptist Church, the Waverly Baptist Church, the Waverly Ruritan Club, the Waverly Hunt Club and charter member of the Waverly Jaycee’s. From 1970 to 1976, he served on the Waverly Town Council and was a past master of the Waverly Masonic Lodge No. 246. He was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. He was the son of the late Robert and Emma Rountree Horton and father of the late Nell Horton Epperson. He is survived by a brother, Surry Horton of Suffolk; three granddaughters, Anne Epperson Monahan of Wakefield, Mary Epperson Grin stead of Waverly, and Susan Epperson Botkin of Claremont; two grandsons, Capt. R.H. Epperson of Lawrence, Dan., and James E. Epperson, III of Ivor; six great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held in Purviance Funeral Chapel, Wakefield, at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 28, by Rev. Anthony George. Burial will be in Wakefield Cemetery, Wakefield, Va. The family will receive friends on Monday evening at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Waverly Rescue Squad or to the Nell Epperson Nursery fund, Wakefield United Methodist Church, Wakefield, VA 23888.
