Laine, 76, died Sunday in Southampton Memorial Hospital, Franklin. Born in Southampton County, he was co-owner of the Waverly Motor Co. and retired as a salesman with Brinkley-Gates Food Distributors. He was a member of Wakefield Congregation Christian Church and its deacon board, Wakefield Ruritan Club and Wakefield Sportsman’s Club. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Edith Bell; a daughter, Mrs. Elo L. Underwood of Waverly; a stepson, Col. William A. Bell of Killene, Texas; four sisters, Mrs. Lena Saunders of Sandston, Mrs. Fannie Griffin of Wakefield, Mrs. Jessie Whittel of Gainesville, Ga., and Mrs. Lucy L. Lonberger of Ivor; two brothers, Albert H. Laine of Richmond and Hugh C. Laine of Pennsauken, N.J.; and five grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, by the Rev. Donald Chick and the Rev. Lee Chattin. Burial will be Wakefield Cemetery. The family is at the residence on North Street, Wakefield, and requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Wakefield Congregational Christian Church or a favorite charity.
