Mrs. Layne retired as an industrial nurse from Gwaltney’s of Smithfield after many years of service. She was a graduate of Ivor High School and St. Elizabeth’s School of Nursing in Richmond. Mrs. Layne was a member of the St. Elizabeth’s Alumni Group, Scattered White Caps, and Wakefield Baptist Church and Woman’s Club of Wakefield. Survived by a daughter, Brenda L. Berlinghoff of Urbanna; two sisters, Edna B. Skinner of Wakefield and Nellie B. Worley of Petersburg; and two brothers, William H. Brown, Jr. of Wakefield and Elton Brown of Toano. Visitation at Mrs. Layne’s residence on Highway 460, Wakefield. Graveside service at 2 p.m. Friday in Wakefield Cemetery by the Rev. Douglas M. Cotter. Memorials to the American Cancer Society; Ivor or Waverly Volunteer Rescue Squads; or Central Middlesex Rescue Squad, Urbanna 23175. Mrs. Layne, widow of the late Walter Raymond Layne, was a graduate of Ivor High School and the St. Elizabeth’s School of Nursing, in Richmond. She was a member of the St. Elizabeth’s Alumni group. Scattered White Caps. She was a member of the Wakefield Baptist Church and the Woman’s Club of Wakefield. Mrs. Layne was retired as an Industrial Nurse of Gwaltney’s of Smithfield for many years. Survivors include: her daughter, Brenda L. Berlinghoff or Urbanna; two sisters, Edna B. Siner of Wakefield, Nellie B. Worley of Petersburg; two brother, William H. "Chicken" Brown, Jr. of Wakefield and Elton Brown of Toana. A graveside funeral service was held in the Wakefield Cemetery on Friday February 20 at 2 p.m. officiated by Rev. Douglas M. Cotter. Memorial donations are suggested to the American Cancer Society, the Ivor or Waverly Volunteer Rescue Squads, or the Central Middlesex Rescue Squad, Urbanna, Va. 23175.
