LONG Joseph Lawrence Long, 48, Wakefield business, church, fraternal and civic leader, died unexpectedly Saturday afternoon in the emergency room of Petersburg General Hospital. He had suffered a heart attack an hour before while driving from Richmond. He was a partner in the Wakefield Oil Company and secretary-treasurer of Munford and Long Distributors. He was a member of the Sussex County School Board. He was a deacon of the Wakefield Baptist Church and a teacher in its Sunday school. In fraternal circles, he was past deputy of Masonic District No. 31 and associate lecturer of District 3, Grand Lodge of Virginia. He was a past master and treasurer of Wakefield Masonic Lodge No. 198. He was a member of Royal Arch Chapter No. 7 of Petersburg, Dalcho Consistory No. 1, of Richmond, Khedive Temple of Norfolk, the Shrine Club of Suffolk and the Shrine Club of Petersburg, and of the Waverly Order of Eastern Star. He was a past president of the Wakefield Ruritan Club, a member of the Tidewater Boy Scout Council and of the Wakefield Educational Society. He was secretary Treasurer of the Wakefield Hunt Club, a charter member of the Wakefield Hunt Club, a charter member of the Wakefield Sportsman's Club, and for 25 years had been a member of the Virginia Oilman's Association. A son of Joseph Henry and Mary Elizabeth McCardle Long, he was a native of Newport News and had lived in Wakefield since 1925. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lucie Taylor Long; a son, J. Lawrence Long, Jr.; two daughters, Alice and Betty Long, and a brother, J. Manley Long, all of Wakefield. Funeral services were conducted Monday at 2:30 p.m. in the Purviance Funeral Chapel, Wakefield by the Rev. D.M. Cotter of the Wakefield Baptist Church, assisted by the Rev. John E. White, pastor emeritus. George R. Marshall, grand lecturer of the Grand Lodge of Virginia conducted Masonic rites at the graveside in Wakefield Cemetery. One hundred masons including five past grand masters of the Grand Lodge or Virginia participated in the services. There were over 200 floral designs and about 1000 people attended the services. Pallbearers were J.N. Barker, S.I. Jenkins, E.A. Barker, H.M. Ellis, O.L. Holt, W.C. Griffin, J.N. Savedge and G.T. Allen.
