James Manley Long, Sr., age 86, died on Sun., June 4 at Louise Obici Memorial Hospital in Suffolk. Mr. Long was a native of Newport News, and was the son of the late Joseph Henry and Mary Elizabeth Long. Mr. Long graduated from Virginia Polytechnical Institute in Blacksburg and the University of Pennsylvania Warton School of Finance. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He owned and operated Long Haulers and Diesel Service and was a partner of Wakefield Oil Co. and M. & L. Distributors. He was a member of the Wakefield Baptist Church and the Wakefield Masonic Lodge #198 A.F.& A.M., where he was a Past Master. Mr. Long was a district Instructor and Former District deputy Grand Master of the 30th Masonic District. He was also a former member of the Shriner Noble Khedive Temple, Norfolk and a former member of the Aragona Moose Lodge #1198, Virginia Beach. He was husband of the late Addie Norfleet Long and brother of the late Joseph Lawrence Long, John Long and Olie Frances Long. He survived by a son, James M. Long, Jr. and his wife, Patricia of Wakefield; a daughter, Jennifer Long Roach, and her husband, Larry of Corryton, TN; four grandchildren, Margie L. Walker, Lisa Long Seward, James M. Long, III, and Ashley M. Stowell; several great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held on Tues. June 6, at 2 p.m. at the Wakefield Baptist Church by Rev. Douglas M. Cotter. Burial with Masonic Rites was in the Wakefield Cemetery. The family received friends at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield on Mon. evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be mad to the Wakefield Baptist Church, Wakefield or a favorite charity. "Evelyn G. HARRELL" (1928 - 2006), her second husband Alton J. HARRELL, and her parents, William Thomas & Gertie (SUTTON) GOODWIN, are all buried in Beaver Hill Cemetery, Edenton, in her native Chowan Co., NC. (Find a Grave Mem. #206342648 &c.) I have been unable to further identify his brother John. He does not appear with the family in the 1910-40 Census returns.
