McEWEN DIES WAKEFIELD - Dr. R. Burns McEwen, who practiced medicine in Wakefield from 1938 until his retirement in 1969, and served as Sussex County medical examiner for 20 years, died Saturday in a Richmond hospital after a short illness. A native of Richmond, he was a graduate of University of Virginia, Medical College of Virginia and served his internship at Stuart Circle Hospital in Richmond. Dr. McEwen, 63, was a member of American Medical Association, Virginia Medical Society, Wakefield Sportman's Club and past president of Wakefield Hunt Club. He was also a member of Cypress Cove Country Club of Franklin, Princess Anne Country Club, and Wakefield United Methodist Church. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Maisie Askew McEwen; two daughters, Mrs. Charles W. Albertson of Richmond and Mrs. Paul T. Chesson of Waverly; a son, R.B. McEwen, Jr. of Wakefield; a sister, Mrs. Martha Jane Kerlin of Winchester; and three grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, by the Rev. E.W. Wilkerson and the Rev. L.P. Bland. Burial will be in Wakefield Cemetery. The family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society or to Wakefield United Methodist Church.
