Mathews of Dendron, died Friday morning at Lakeview Hospital, Suffolk, after an illness of several weeks. Besides her husband she is survived by her mother, Mrs. S.R. Hines, of Dendron, a foster daughter, Miss Jennie May White; a sister, Mrs. R.C. Burton of Suffolk, and four brothers, R.H. and W.M. Hines of Dendron, J.C. Hines of Norfolk, and V.H. Hines of Huntington, W.Va., and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the residence in Dendron, burial being made in Wakefield cemetery. Mrs. Mathews was a cousin of Mrs. C.M. Cornwell and C.E. Cornwell and C.E. Hines of the Berlin community. (Find a Grave Mem. #20104345) Birthdate &c. from D.Cert. 9455 (Suffolk #118), which gives her husband as George Waverly MATHEWS. The 1900 Census - Berlin & Ivor Dist., Southampton Co. - also gives b. Jun 1880. Her parents' D.Certs. both give buried in Waverly, but Find a Grave doesn't list either in Waverly Cemetery. The D.Certs. for both her parents, Samuel Robert & Tabitha Ann (POND) HINES, give buried in Waverly, but Find a Grave doesn't list either in Waverly Cemetery. Her paternal grandfather, Mansfield HINES, served the Confederacy as a private in Co. A, 41st VA Infantry, and was killed in action at Malvern Hill, 1 Jul 1862. His brother John Burton HINES served in the Southampton Cavalry - Co. A, 13th VA Cav. Their father, John HINES, is buried (unmarked) at "Oakwell," Millfield Rd., Manry.
