Mitchell was 55 years old and unmarried. He lived on a farm near Jarratt. A passing motorist discovered the man's body lying on the road and summoned authorities. D.Cert. 28116 (Henry #22) gives son of W.R. & Mary J. (RICHARDSON) MITCHELL, all b. Greensville Co.; indertaker H.W. Hall & Bro., Emporia. He m. Lelia Adelaide NEWTON. daughter of John & Susan, 18 Dec 1911 in Richmond. Richmond M.Reg. 1911 #1281 gives son of W.R. & M.M. MITCHELL. His WW-I draft card gives his nearest relation as his mother, Mary L. MITCHELL. His parents were William Robert & Mary Luvinia (RICHARDSON) MITCHELL, buried in Round Hill Cemetery, Greensville Co. (Find a Grave Mem. #15392039 &c.) His father was a Confederate veteran, having served as 5th Sergeant in Co. F, 12th VA Infantry. He was captured at Gettysburg, and held prisoner at Ft. Delaware, until exchanged 18 Feb 1865. He d. 24 May 1925 in Sussex Co. His widow applied for a pension 28 Jul 1925. By coincidence (& possibly leading to some confusion), William had a sister named Mary Jane Luvinia (MITCHELL; Mrs. Algernon Sidney Jr.) ALLEN. They were children of Drury P. & "Sallie" Sarah E.
