Arrangements by Purviance Funeral Home. ****************************************************************************** BLANCHE GRIFFIN MELLINGER WAKEFIELD - Blanche Griffin Melinger, 83, died Saturday (Oct. 9, 1999) at Fishersville. She was born Feb. 14, 1916, at Sussex County, a daughter of Kenny G. and Addie Clark Griffin. She was a resident of Wakefield from 1916 to 1934. She was the widow of Harry A. Mellinger. She was a graduate of Wakefield High School and a former member of Elam Baptist Church near Wakefield and Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church in San Diego. She attended James Madison University when it was Harrisonburg Teacher College; she also attended the University of Tennessee. She served as a public school teacher, including 10 years of service in Arlington. She was a homemaker, community volunteer and grower of roses. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Elva Johnson and Lucille Britt. Survivors include a daughter, Wendy M. Harrison of Staunton; a son, Jeffrey Griffin Mellinger of San Diego; and two grandchildren, Seth and Scott Harrison. A private graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wakefield Cemetery. The family will receive friends at a luncheon at noon Wednesday at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield. Memorials may be made to the Staunton-Augusta Rescue Squad, 1601 N. Coalter St., Staunton, VA 24401. Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, is handling arrangements. ****************************************************************************** Blanche Griffin Mellinger Mrs. Blanche Griffin Mellinger, 83, a resident of Wakefield from 1916-1934, died Saturday, October 9, 1999, in Fishersville, Va. She was born on February 14, 1916, in Sussex County, Va., the daughter of the late Kenny G. and Addie Clark Griffin. She was the widow of Harry A. Mellinger. Mrs. Mellinger was a graduate of Wakefield High School and a former member of the Elam Baptist Church near Wakefield. She was also a former member of the Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church in San Diego, Ca. She attended James Madison University when it was Harrisonburg's Teacher's College and the University of Tennessee and had served as a public school teacher, including ten years in Arlington, Va., public schools. A dedicated homemaker, mother, neighbor, and community volunteer, she loved growing roses and frequently gave her children large bouquets to carry to school. She is survived by a daughter, Wendy M. Harrison of Staunton; a son, Jeffrey Griffin Mellinger of San Diego, Ca.; and two grandchildren. She was sister of the late Elva Johnson and Lucille Britt. A private graveside service will be held in Wakefield Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 13, 1999. The family invites friends to join them for a light luncheon at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, beginning at Noon on the day of the service. Modern Rt. 606 is called Union Hill Rd. below Cash's Corner, and Beaver Dam Rd. above.
