Born in Isle of Wight County, he was a graduate of a high school in Newport News and of International Business College there. He had made his home in Wakefield since 1925. A son of Robert Lee and Stella Uzzell Munford, he was a member of the Wakefield Methodist Church, member of the board of stewards and charge lay leader of that church. Charter Member He was a member of the Wakefield Masonic Lodge No. 198 and Khedive Temple in Norfolk; a charter member and past president of the Wakefield Ruritan Club; charter member and president for the past thirty years of the Wakefield Community Hunt Club and charter member of the Wakefield Community Hunt Club and charter member of the Wakefield Sportsman’s Club. Farmer and President He was a farmer and president of the Wakefield Oil Company, Inc. and M & L Distributors, Inc.; president and chairman of the board of directors of the Bank of Sussex and Surry; director of the Virginia Wildlife Federation; a member of the Virginia Oilman’s Association and member of the Sussex County Selective Service Board during World War II. Member of General Assembly He served as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates as a representatives from Greensville and Sussex County for two terms from 1954 through 1958. He is survived by his wife, Lucille Pond Munford; a daughter, Mrs. L. Ashworth of Wakefield; a sister, Mrs. C. Randolph Gardner of Hampton; a granddaughter, Sallie Quarles Ashworth of Wakefield, and two nephews, Frederick L. Gardner and C. Randolph Gardner, Jr., of Hampton. Funeral services were held Sunday, November 26, at the Purviance Funeral Chapel at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. L.P. Bland, pastor of Wakefield Methodist Church, officiating. Burial was in the Wakefield Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dr. E.C. Nettles, S.I. Jenkins, J.N. Barker, J.N. Savedge, Judge C.E. Holladay, W.C. Seeley, Sr., G.T. Allen, R.M. Cobb, O.L. Holt and Clarence Griffin. ****************************************************************************** G. L. Munford of Wakefield, Buried Recently George Leland Munford, a member of the House of Delegates from 1954 to 1958 and mayor of Wakefield the last 20 years, died in his home Friday, November 24, 1961, after a long illness. A native of Isle of Wight County, he attended high school and the International Business College in Newport News. He moved to Wakefield in 1925 and represented Greensville and Sussex Counties in the House for two terms. He was a farmer, President of Wakefield Oil Co., and the M&L Distributing Company, and was President and Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Sussex and Surry. Mr. Munford was also a charter member and President the last 30 years of the Wakefield Community Hunt Club, and a charter member and past President of the Wakefield Ruritan Club. He was a member of Wakefield Masonic Lodge 198 and Khedive Temple of the Shrine in Norfolk. He was also a member of the Board of Stewards and a Lay Leader of the Wakefield Methodist Church.
