ROBERT LEE MUNFORD 

WAKEFIELD MAYOR’S FATHER BURIAL HERE TUESDAY 

  Robert Lee Munford, 84, of Newport News died Sunday, March 26, in Dixie 
Hospital, Hampton, after an illness of five months.

  Born in Isle of Wight County, the son of Wells Munford and Sally Britt 
Munford, he had been a resident of Newport News for 54 years.  He was a 
member of First Congregational Christian Church, of the Newman Bible Class 
and the Retired Men’s Club.  He was employed by the Texas Company in Newport 
News and Richmond until his retirement in 1945.

  He is survived by one son, George L. Munford of Wakefield; one daughter, 
Mrs. C. Randolph Gardner of Hampton; one brother, Matthew Munford of 
Chesterfield County; three sisters, Mrs. Lula Munford Uzzell of Norfolk, 
Mrs. E.C. Chapman and Mrs. Lillian Mede, both of Hopewell; three grandchildren 
and one great grandchild.

  Funeral services were held at the First Congregational Christian Church in 
Newport News and were conducted by the Reverend Jesse H. Dollor, pastor, and 
the Reverend Lineous P. Bland of the Wakefield Methodist Church.  Burial was 
in the Wakefield Cemetery.

  Pallbearers were J.M. Long, Rufus Powell, W.H. Baker, S.F. Blake, G.C. 
Presson and W.A. Cutchins.
