He was a farmer by profession. He served in the U.S. Army in World War I. In fact, he was on a troop ship crossing the Atlantic heading for Europe when halfway through the ocean journey, the ship received word that the War had ended. The troop ship was redirected and headed back to the United States. The family home where he resided is unique because it straddles the Sussex County line and the Surry County line. Rocky Hock Road (Sussex County) and White Marsh Road (Surry County) meet at this same place! In essence he ate in one county and slept in another! In 1919 he married Essie Kate Richardson (1895 - 1998), who lived to be 102 years old! Charlie and Essie were married 53 years and had three children - Frank, Rebecca and Randolph "Tuck." Essie was also a member of Rocky Hock Church. Both are buried in Wakefield Cemetery. Thanks to Randolph and Dolly Murphy for the information and picture.
