NICHOLSON OF WAKEFIELD DIES AT 91 BY ELLEN ROBERTSON - TIMES DISPATCH STAFF WRITER Jennie Barrett Spratley Nicholson was the first woman named to the Wakefield Planning commission. She worked on Wakefield's first comprehensive plan. A life member of the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, she participated in statewide preservation efforts, including many with Smith's Fort Plantation and Bacon's Castle. The Thomas Rolfe APVA branch honored her in 2000 and she was among those accepting plaudits from the Virginia House of Delegates in 2001. In 2001 the Wakefield Foundation honored her contributions as a home economics and science teacher at Wakefield High School, Waverly High School and Waverly Junior High School. On her 90th birthday in 2007, the Sussex Board of Supervisors acclaimed her work in education, her church and community. Mrs. Nicholson, a 1938 James Madison College graduate who retired in 1978, died Thursday at age 91. The Surry County native was the widow of John Benjamin Nicholson, Jr. Survivors include two sons, John Benjamin Nicholson, III of Wakefield and William Spratley Nicholson of Richmond; a sister, Lois Spratley Donald of Williamsburg; and a granddaughter. A funeral will be held today, Saturday, at 10:30 a.m. at Wakefield United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir for more than 60 years and advised the youth fellowship.
