He was a native of Southampton County and had lived in Ivor for the past 10 years. A son of the late John T. and Mattie Bristow Owney, he was a member of Rocky Hock Methodist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. P.P. Rolley and Mrs. Jesse O. Gay, both of Waverly; three sons, James C. Owney of Waverly, Waverly H. Owney of Smithfield, and J. Wilson Owney of Ivor; one brother, Menalcus B. Owney of Norfolk, and sixteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Services were held Tuesday, March 20, at 2:30 p.m. in the Purviance Funeral Chapel with the Rev. L.P. Bland and Rev. B.W. Holloman officiating. Burial followed in Rocky Hock Cemetery. Pallbearers were Crawley Laine, Russell West, Marvis Felts, Warren Cobb, Marsden Pulley, Earnest Turner and A.W. He was a retired carpenter and a member of Rocky Hock Methodist Church. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. P.P. Rolley and Mrs. Jesse O. Gay, both of Waverly; three sons, Waverly H. Owney of Smithfield; Joseph Wilson Owney of Ivor, and James C. Owney of Waverly; a brother, Manalcus [sic; Menalcus] B. Owney of Norfolk; 16 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held at 2:30 P.M. March 20 at the Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, with burial in the Rocky Hock Methodist Church Cemetery, Surry County. A, 18th Battalion VA Heavy Artillery. James was the informant for his D.Cert., which gives John Thomas. His mother applied for a pension for his service 7 Oct 1929 in Sussex Co. It gives John Tyler OWNEY, m. 23 Mar 1869 in Southampton Co. Rather, they m. 15 Mar 1869. (Southampton Co.
