A gentleman who was not far from the scene of the double drowning near Wakefield, Va., says it was among the saddest occurrences he ever knew of. The boys who lost their lives while skating were the 12 and 16-year-old sons of John D. Owens, Owens [sic; Owen], former county clerk of Sussex county. The elder lost his life while seeking to rescue the younger, who broke through the ice but did not sink at first, keeping his head above water by resting against fractured edges of ice. When the larger youth approached the aperture, a large section of ice caved in. Both boys sank and came up under solid ice. A third person sought to save the drowning boys, but he, too, broke through and came near freezing to death before help came. Three boys and thre girls were on a pond skating. No harm came to any of the girls. When the drowned boys were taken home, their mother went into hysterics. The father finally was located by wire at Birmingham, Ala.
