A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Wakefield Methodist Church, with burial in Wakefield Cemetery. A son of the late Joseph H. and Mangrum Wilkerson [sic*] Pursell, he was born in Dinwiddie County March 5, 1869. Early in manhood he was connected with the Surry Lumber Company at Dendron, and 25 years owned and operated Dendron Drug Company. For the past 29 years he owned and operated the Wakefield Wholesale Grocery Company. He had been connected with the Bank of Sussex and Surry for many years. He was steward of the Wakefield Methodist Church and also taught the men’s Bible class. He was a member of Acca Temple Shrine in Richmond. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Pearl Bryant Pursell; two sons, W.H. Purcell, Jr., of Petersburg, and Marvin E. Pursell, Jr., of Petersburg, and Marvin E. Pursell, of Baltimore; a brother, D.E. Pursell, of Lake City, Fla., and four grandchildren. ****************************************************************************** W. H. Pursell, 82, Bank President, Dies in Richmond William H. Pursell, 82, of Dendron, President of the Bank of Sussex and Surry, died Thursday in a Richmond hospital after an illness of several months. Mr. Pursell was prominent for many years in the business, civic and religious circles of Sussex and Surry counties. He owned and operated the Dendron Drug Company and long was connected with the Surry Lumber Company at Dendron. He was president of the Bank until his death. Among his numerous activities he was a 32d degree Mason, senior warden in the Episcopal Church, chairman of the Dendron School Board, and for many years a teacher of a large Bible Class. Mr. Pursell often visited Norfolk where he has many friends. He was the uncle of City Clerk John D. Corbell. Born in Dinwiddie County on March 5, 1868, he was the son of Joseph H. and Mrs. Margaret Wilkinson* Pursell. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Pearl Bryant Pursell, and two sons, William H. Pursell Jr. of Petersburg, and Marvin E. Pursell of Baltimore, Md. Funeral services were conducted Sunday at 2 P.M. at his home in Wakefield. Burial was in the family lot there.
