Webster Vernon Rogers, Sr., 81, died Friday, June 22, at his Wakefield home after a brief illness. A native of Sussex County, he was a former employee of the Surry Lumber Company, a floor refinisher, a veteran of the Army of World War I, and a member of the Wakefield Sportsman Club and the Wakefield Hunt Club. He was the son of Richard Samuel and Addie Virginia Faison Rogers. Survivors include his wife, Bernice Branch Rogers of Wakefield; one son, W.V. Robert, Jr. of Wakefield, one daughter, Mrs. Sterling E. Rives of Petersburg; six grandchildren; and two brothers, Ashton S. Rogers of Greensboro, and Preston Rogers of Richmond. Funeral services were held at the Purviance Funeral Chapel in Wakefield Sunday, June 24 at 2:30 p.m. with burial at the Wakefield cemetery, Rev. R.L. Consolvo officiated. Pallbearers were V.L. Worrell, Andrew Rives, Truett Garrett, B.E. Cowling, Jr., Albert Cowling, Aubrey S. Whitmore and Mason West.
