WAKEFIELD - James W. Renney Sr., 80, of Wakefield, Va., went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 26, 2007. He was born in Brookings, S.D., Dec. 9, 1926, and was the son of the late Mack Zelette and Verna Friedel Renny. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by Ila Mae Skinner Renney, his loving wife of 46 years; his brother, George Renney; and sister, Betty Sciefelbein. Mr. Renney is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Renney; one son, James William Renney Jr., and wife, Suzanne, of Wakefield, Va.; two daughters, Nancy Renney Hutcherson, and husband, John, of Troy, Va. and Betty Renney Sharp, and husband, Steve, of Charlottesville, Va.; eight grandchildren, Jordan Renney Berryman and husband, Steve, Elizabeth Grantier Renney, Rebecca Nielson Renney, Michelle Hutcherson Cooper and husband, Jason, James Franklin Hutcherson and wife, Daisy, Abigail Renney Hutcherson, Elizabeth Corinne Sharp, and Bradley William Sharp; three great-grandchildren, Avery Raine Cooper, Ila Mae Cooper, and Jack Goodrich Berryman; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Renney was a graduate of the university of Richmond and T.C. Williams School of Law, and practiced law in Wakefield, Va., since 1958. He was recently honored for 50 years as a member of the Virginia State Bar. Mr. Renney was a former mayor of [Wakefield and a member of] Wakefield United Methodist Church and a former youth Sunday school teacher, Mr. Renney served his country in the United States Army Airborne Air-Assault Demolition 1946 - 1948 and in later years was Major in Virginia National Guard in the Judge Advocate General’s Office as a legal officer. Other affiliations and interest include airplane pilot, member of the Wakefield Ruritan Club, one of the Founding Fathers of Tidewater Academy, proud member of Kingbrook’s Pro- Pheasants, Master of Ceremonies for Wakefield Community Annual Shad Planking for many years, and member of the Shack Gunning Club. Jim Renney was a most generous, kind, and loving gentleman. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He will live in their heart forever as he dwells in Heaven with our Lord Jesus Christ. He touched the lives of everyone he met in a special way. The manner in which he lived his life expressed his love for our Lord, his family, his friends, and his country. A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, at the Wakefield United Methodist Church, Church Street, Wakefield, Va., with the Rev. G.C. Branton officiating. Interment will follow in the Wakefield Cemetery. The family will receive friends following interment in the fellowship hall of the Wakefield United Methodist Church.
