BY JOHN LYLE James Nicholas Savedge Sr., former mayor of Wakefield and chairman emeritus of the Bank of Sussex and Surry, died Sunday after a brief illness. He was 82 and lived in Wakefield. Mr. Savedge was elected to the Wakefield Town Council from 1945 to 1976, serving as president from 1952 to 1962 and mayor from 1962 to 1976. The native of Wakefield was associated with the Bank of Sussex and Surry in an executive capacity for more than 35 years, serving as a director, president and retiring in 1994 as chairman emeritus, said his son, William B. Savedge of Wakefield. In 1936, he graduated from the College of William and Mary, where he was an aide to the president, Dr. John Stewart Bryant, and played on the varsity baseball team. Mr. Savedge was a member of the "7" Society. Membership is acknowledged only when a member dies, said his son. He was a member of the Flat Hat Club and the Order of the White Jacket, a former president of the Wakefield Ruritan Club and a member of the Wakefield Baptist Church. Other survivors include his wife, Fay Bryant Savedge, and a daughter, Catherine Savedge Schlesinger of Williamsburg. One son, James N. Savedge, Jr., died in 1974. A service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Wakefield Town Cemetery.
